Aleksanyan Vasily Georgievich

Aleksanyan Vasily Georgievich, 15.12.1971 – 03.10.2011. He lived in Moscow. From 1996 to 2003 Vasily Aleksanyan was Head of the Legal Department and Vice President of Yukos Oil Company. From 2003 to 2006, he was a lawyer for Platon Lebedev, head of Group Menatep, Vasily Shakhnovsky, President of Yukos-Moscow and Mikhail Khodorkovsky, President of Yukos Oil Company; from 1 April 2006, he was Executive Vice President of "Yukos" with presidential powers.

He was accused of committing crimes under Article 160 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Misappropriation or embezzlement of funds") and Article 174 ("Money laundering") of the Russian Criminal Code. On 6 April 2006, he was arrested by decision of the Simonovsky District Court of Moscow. Alexanyan was diagnosed with advanced AIDS stage 3-a in a detention centre back in 2006, but he didn't get any treatment, and six months later, the disease got worse and moved to stage 3-b. In response to lawyers' demands to hospitalise their client in a specialised clinic, Aleksanyan was transferred to a hospital in the detention centre. There, according to his lawyers, he contracted tuberculosis.

On 6 February 2008, the Simonovsky Court, taking into account Vasily Aleksanyan's serious illness, decided to suspend the proceedings in the case, however, on 20 October 2008 the Simonovsky Court of Moscow extended his arrest until 22 January 2009.

On 30 December 2009, Vasily Aleksanyan was released from custody on bail in the amount of 50 million roubles, as ordered by the court. In June 2010, the case was dismissed due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

On 3 October 2011, Vasily Aleksanyan died.
