Mokhnatkin Sergei Evgenyevich

Mokhnatkin Sergei Evgenyevich, born on 6 March 1954. Resident of Moscow. He cooperated with the movement ‘For Human Rights’, reorganised the Tver branch of this organisation in 2012-2013. He was a public defender of Sergei Krivov, a prisoner of the Bolotnoye case. He observed elections and public events, participated in the provision of humanitarian aid to Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia institutions.

On 9 June 2010 he was convicted under part 2 of Article 318 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Use of violence dangerous to life and health against a representative of the authorities") to 2 years and 6 months of imprisonment with serving his sentence in a penal colony of general regime. On 16 August 2010, the Moscow City Court upheld the sentence against Sergei Mokhnatkin. On 23 April 2012 he was pardoned by the President of the Russian Federation at the time Dmitry Medvedev. The Memorial Human Rights Centre recognised Sergei Mokhnatkin as a political prisoner in this case.

On 10 December 2014, he was sentenced under part 1 of Article 318 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Use of violence not dangerous to life and health against a representative of the authorities") to 4.5 years in a strict regime penal colony.

On 3 June 2016, he was sentenced under Article 319 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Insulting a representative of the authorities") to 11 months of correctional labour with deduction of 10% of earnings in favour of the state. The punishment was converted into a real term: in fact, Mokhnatkin was added 2 months and 3 days of a strict regime penal colony. After an appeal, Mokhnatkin's sentence was reduced by 1 month.

On 20 March 2017, he was convicted of part. 2 of Article 321 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Disorganisation of the work of correctional institutions: use of violence against an employee of a place of deprivation of liberty, not dangerous to life and health") to 2 years in a penal colony, and 2 months of a strict regime penal colony was added to the unfinished sentence. In custody since 2 January 2014.

Released on 14 December 2018, died on 28 May 2020 after release from the effects of injuries sustained in places of detention.
