Christian preacher and blogger Khristolyub Vegan has died in a penal colony in Voronezh, according<\/a> to his father. He was 43 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a prison official contacted the family to arrange the collection of the body on 20 April, the authorities have refused to disclose the cause of death. The news has come as a shock to his relatives: his father noted that they had spoken only days prior, at which point his son had raised no concerns regarding his health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KhristolyubVegan\u2019s death follows a period of escalating pressure from the state. In January 2026, his sentence was tightened, resulting in his transfer to a general-regime colony where he was held under ‘strict conditions’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His time in custody was marked by what he described as a series of arbitrary disciplinary measures. While previously held in a settlement colony, he was repeatedly consigned to solitary confinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘I was given five days in solitary as soon as I arrived,’ he reported at the time. ‘Then another 15, for nothing at all.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had previously voiced the fear that the system intended to ‘leave him to rot’ in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, Khristolyub Vegan was sentenced to three years in a settlement colony over YouTube videos. He was convicted of \u2018offending the feelings of religious believers\u2019 and \u2018rehabilitation of Nazism\u2019, in connection with remarks on Islam, the Soviet army, and the recruitment of prisoners for the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond his theological discourse, Khristolyub Vegan was a vocal critic of the Kremlin. He frequently published anti-war content targeting the Russian authorities and Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His final act of public defiance occurred on the day he was ordered to begin his sentence. Rather than surrendering to the authorities, he staged a solo protest, brandishing placards that read ‘No to war’ and ‘God is love’.
