{"id":64717,"date":"2026-08-31T10:26:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T07:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/memopzk.org\/news\/otchyot-o-nashej-rabote-za-i-polugodie-2026-goda\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T14:30:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T11:30:14","slug":"otchyot-o-nashej-rabote-za-i-polugodie-2026-goda","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/memopzk.org\/en\/news\/otchyot-o-nashej-rabote-za-i-polugodie-2026-goda\/","title":{"rendered":"Political Prisoners Memorial: our work in the first half of 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the first half of 2026, <em>Political Prisoners Memorial<\/em> raised <strong>3,327,522 roubles<\/strong> (approx. \u20ac33,116) to provide assistance to political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spent the funds as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2,936,462.90 roubles<\/strong> (approx. \u20ac29,224) on legal assistance in politically motivated criminal cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>842,299.25 roubles<\/strong> (approx. \u20ac8,384) on legal assistance to protect the rights of political prisoners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>793,228.54 roubles<\/strong> (approx. \u20ac7,895) on humanitarian assistance to those deprived of their liberty for political reasons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, we spent <strong>4,571,990 roubles<\/strong> (approx. \u20ac45,508) \u2014 more than we raised. We cover the shortfall with funds donated to the project\u2019s core operations. Unfortunately, this leaves us unable to develop the project further: to make the website faster and more user-friendly, to hire specialists who could significantly increase the assistance we provide to political prisoners, and to scale up our efforts to expose political repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal assistance in politically motivated criminal cases<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>We provided <strong>53 instances<\/strong> of legal assistance to <strong>26 victims<\/strong> of political repression who were deprived of their liberty. This work not only provided legal representation, but also helped protect prisoners\u2019 rights, prevented the most serious violations against them, and offered moral support to those facing politically motivated prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, we funded<strong> 63 months<\/strong> of lawyers\u2019 work on behalf of these <strong>26 people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This legal assistance included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Legal representation during the pre-trial investigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legal representation before the court of first instance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legal representation before the court of appeal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legal representation before the court of cassation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal assistance in detention<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>We provided assistance to <strong>16 prisoners<\/strong> on <strong>39 occasions<\/strong>, as some received this legal assistance more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we did:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arranged for lawyers to visit political prisoners in detention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensured the submission of applications, petitions and complaints about conditions of detention and violations of prisoners\u2019 rights, including cases where medical care was denied or inadequate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pursued legal claims and represented prisoners in court in cases concerning conditions of detention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This work helped secure appropriate medical care for prisoners with health conditions, as well as the medical examinations they required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Humanitarian assistance<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first half of the year, we provided <strong>60 instances<\/strong> of humanitarian assistance to <strong>40 victims<\/strong> of political repression and their family members, including <strong>30 Ukrainian citizens<\/strong> held in Russian detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forms of assistance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transferring money to prisoners\u2019 personal FSIN (Federal Penitentiary Service) accounts for them to spend on food and everyday necessities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sending parcels and care packages, including medical supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subscribing political prisoners to magazines and newspapers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping prisoners\u2019 families cover travel costs for long and short prison visits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing released political prisoners with financial assistance to cover transport and other essential expenses during the first days after their release<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supporting the project\u2019s work<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, we raised <strong>4,544,317 roubles<\/strong> (approx. \u20ac45,233) to support the <em>Political Prisoners Memorial<\/em>\u2018s work as a whole.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These funds allowed us to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organise direct assistance to political prisoners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collect and publish up-to-date information on prisoners\u2019 postal addresses, account details, support groups and upcoming solidarity initiatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain the project\u2019s technical infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyse hundreds of criminal cases and prepare case assessments that form the basis for recognising individuals as political prisoners, enabling us to maintain our lists of political prisoners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Produce analytical materials based on data from our database of political prisoners and identify trends in politically motivated repression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry out advocacy work in defence of political prisoners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document and report on ongoing political repression in Russia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-64717","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry","news-type-nashi-novosti-en"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Political Prisoners Memorial: our work in the first half of 2026 - Political prisoners support.
