Aleksandr Filatov was born on 9 December 1984. He lived in Novorossiysk and is the father of two children. Following his arrest, he was transferred to Krasnoyarsk.

He was convicted under Part 1 of Article 282.2 of the Russian Criminal Code ('Organising the activities of an extremist organisation') in connection with his membership in a community of Jehovah's Witnesses, which is banned in Russia, and sentenced to six years' imprisonment in a general-regime penal colony. The appellate court upheld the sentence.

He was deprived of liberty from 13 July 2021. On 9 July 2026, he was released upon completion of his sentence.
