Ihor Khai is a citizen of Ukraine and a serviceman of the Azov Special Purpose Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. He was reportedly taken prisoner in Mariupol on 18 May 2022.

In April 2026, it became known that Khai had been sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment under Part 2 of Article 205.4 of the Russian Criminal Code ('Participation in a terrorist community') and Article 205.3 of the Russian Criminal Code ('Undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activity').

In May 2026, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange.
