Aleksandr Kotov is a citizen of Russia and a resident of Saransk.

He is charged under Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Russian Criminal Code ('Participation in the activities of a terrorist organisation').

According to the investigation, Kotov and his acquaintance Maksim Zhivechkov decided to join the Freedom of Russia Legion. To that end, they allegedly established contact with representatives of the Legion, photographed and filmed various buildings in Saransk and sent the images to their 'handlers', and planned to travel to Ukraine in order to take part in combat operations as members of the Freedom of Russia Legion.

He has reportedly been deprived of liberty since 6 April 2024.
