Nikolai Popov lived in Balashikha, in the Moscow oblast. He was detained in 2026 on charges of making public calls for extremist activity and inciting hatred or enmity (Part 2 of Article 280, Part 2 of Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). He died in custody on July 7, 2026; the causes and circumstances of his death are unknown.
