Vadym Shevchenko is a Ukrainian citizen and a resident of the city of Polohy, Zaporizhzhia Region. On 15 March 2022, he was detained by Russian servicemen at a checkpoint near the village of Novokarlivka.

For almost a month, Vadym's family had no information about his whereabouts. Later, it became known that he was being held in Olenivka, after which he was transferred to Taganrog. It was not until December 2022 that the Russian authorities officially confirmed Vadym Shevchenko's detention. However, the grounds on which he has been deprived of his liberty for more than four years remain unknown.

Since February 2023, Vadym Shevchenko has been held in a penal colony in Mordovia. During his imprisonment, Shevchenko lost 30 kilograms.
