Moscow journalist Darya Shipacheva sentenced to twelve years for treason

Judge Sergei Podoprigorov of the Moscow City Court sentenced journalist and feminist Darya Shipacheva on 29 July 2026 to twelve years’ imprisonment and a fine of 300,000 roubles (≈€3,280). In addition, the court ordered the confiscation of 1,558,000 roubles (≈€17,050).

Darya Shipacheva was charged with treason under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code, allegedly in connection with a money transfer to Ukraine. According to journalist Ilya Zhegulyov, she had many relatives in Ukraine, and a transfer to one of them may have been what prompted the criminal prosecution.

Before the verdict, Darya Shipacheva spent more than a year in remand custody in Rostov-on-Don and Moscow after being detained on 23 April 2025. Her detention followed a campaign of harassment by supporters of the Male State movement.

Prior to her arrest, Darya Shipacheva worked as a science and medical journalist, contributing to publications including RBK, Lenta.ru, Takie Dela, Forbes, Wonderzine and Reminder.
