Ukrainian serviceman Vasyl Dmytriuk, who was taken prisoner in Mariupol, has been sentenced to 17 years on charges of seizing a vessel and abducting its crew. A Russian court classified Dmytriuk’s actions from 2018—when, while serving with the Ukrainian Border Guard, he brought a fishing seiner and its crew to a Ukrainian port—as a crime; the vessel had been operating in disputed waters of the Sea of Azov, carrying documentation issued in occupied Crimea.
