Serhii Kopylov is a citizen of Ukraine and a serviceman in the Azov Special Purpose Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. He was held in captivity from March 2022.
On 17 December 2025, Kopylov's case was referred to the Southern District Military Court. On 28 January 2026, Judge Andrei Minashkin found Kopylov guilty under Part 2 of Article 205.4 of the Russian Criminal Code ('Participation in a terrorist community') and Article 205.3 of the Russian Criminal Code ('Undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activity') and sentenced him to 20 years' imprisonment.
On 5 June 2026, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange.
