In April 2022, under Part 1.1 and Part 2 of Article 282.2 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Involvement in the activities and participation in the activities of an extremist organisation") in connection with membership in the community of Jehovah's Witnesses banned in Russia, he was sentenced to 5.5 years of suspended imprisonment with a probationary period of 5 years. The appellate court overturned the sentence, but upon retrial the punishment remained the same. He was under a written undertaking not to leave.
