Dmytro Romanenko is a Ukrainian citizen and a serviceman of the Azov Special Operations Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, holding the rank of senior sergeant. He was captured in Mariupol in May 2022.

On 28 May 2026, Romanenko was added to the Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Service's list of extremists and terrorists.

No later than 21 July 2026, the Southern District Military Court handed down its verdict. Dmytro Romanenko was found guilty under the articles concerning participation in the activities of a terrorist community and training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony.

According to the prosecution, 'in February 2017, Romanenko voluntarily joined the Azov Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine, underwent training at a training ground, and subsequently, as a driving instructor of an operational platoon, took part in hostilities in the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic.'
