Ukrainian serviceman Ivan Tereshchenko, who was taken prisoner in Mariupol, has been sentenced to 17 years on charges of kidnapping and the seizure of a vessel. A Russian court classified Tereshchenko’s actions from 2018—when he was serving with the Ukrainian Border Guard—in this manner; at that time, he was aboard the patrol boat Onyx, which brought a fishing seiner and its crew into a Ukrainian port. The vessel had been operating in disputed waters of the Sea of Azov, carrying documentation issued in occupied Crimea.
