Nova Kakhovka resident sentenced to 12.5 years on charges of passing information to Ukrainian intelligence. Her husband was previously convicted in a similar case
A resident of occupied Nova Kakhovka has been sentenced to 12.5 years on charges of high treason (Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code). The sentence was reported by the ‘Kherson Oblast Court’, a body established by the Russian authorities.
The prosecution alleged that the woman and her husband collected information about the locations of Russian troops and military equipment between October 2023 and April 2024 and passed it to Ukrainian intelligence. A press release issued by the occupation court states: ‘The criminal case against the convicted woman’s husband was previously heard by the court, which sentenced him to a lengthy term of imprisonment.’
The couple appear to be Nadiia Berezhna and Andrii Berezhnyi. The ‘Kherson Oblast Court’ gives the woman’s age as 38, whereas Nadiia Berezhna turned 39 in July. This may be a simple error.
Both were detained in May 2024: Andrii on 22 May and Nadiia on 28 or 29 May. The project If There Were No War reports that for 14 months their relatives did not know where they were and believed them to be dead. The couple were formally charged on 15 May 2025, a year after they were detained.
Andrii Berezhnyi is 34. In June, Russian law enforcement agencies reported a sentence that most likely relates to him: 11 years on charges of espionage (Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code). According to the latest available information, he is held in Remand Prison No. 4 in Volgograd.
In August, Nadiia was transferred from Simferopol, in occupied Crimea, to Chonhar in Kherson Oblast, presumably to stand trial.
The couple have two children: a daughter born in 2008 and a son born in 2014.
