Igor Ranav is a prominent businessman and public figure in Chukotka, as well as an advocate for the traditional way of life of Indigenous peoples. He previously headed the Chukotka branch of the regional public organization "Association of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of Chukotka," which operates under the umbrella of the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North (RAIPON). Since 2022, Ranav has faced repeated administrative prosecution for anti-war statements made online. On February 18, 2026, a Moscow court sentenced Ranav to 2 years in a penal colony under the statute prohibiting the desecration of symbols of military glory, following his online publication of an image critical of the St. George ribbon.
